Sri Lanka could face action over 'poor pitch'

The pitch was criticised as "too dry" by both teams after Australia wrapped up a 125-run victory.
"The pitch for the Galle Test... has been rated as poor by Chris Broad....who officiated in the Test," the ICC said in a statement.
"The ICC... will now consider all the evidence, including studying video footage of the match and submissions from the host member board, before reaching their decision in due course."
SLC must provide a written response to Broad's report within 14 days and if the global body is not satisfied with the explanation, it could be fined and ordered to undertake "corrective action".
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said memories of the infamous Mumbai surface of 2004, which proved to be unplayable, came flooding back, while his successor as skipper Michael Clarke slammed the conditions by declaring "day one felt like day five" in Galle.
Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan added: "Usually, the wicket here is good for both the seamers and the spinners but I think it was too dry and made batting difficult."

Tendulkar ruled out of ODI series

"He has been advised rest for four weeks. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has chosen Subramaniam Badrinath to replace him," BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement.
Badrinath, who turned 31 last week, got a belated birthday gift after Tendulkar became the eighth member of the squad to be forced out of the tour through injury.
Tendulkar missed the first one-dayer at Durham with a swollen toe, ensuring he would not make his eagerly-awaited 100th international century on the tour of England.
Tendulkar, 38, has made 99 centuries in international cricket, 51 in Tests and 48 in one-dayers.
Having scored 274 for seven and reducing England to 27 for two at Durham, India looked on course to beat their hosts for the first time on the tour but the match was abandoned due to rain.
Middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma fractured his right index finger during the match and was ruled out of the series, with Manoj Tiwary called up as his replacement.
Sharma followed Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh who have already returned home with injuries.
The 50-over world champions arrived as the top-ranked test team but were knocked off their perch as England swept the series 4-0.
The second one-dayer is at the Rose Bowl, Hampshire on Tuesday.

League One - Morrison salvages point for Owls

The Addicks made a dream start by taking the lead in the third minute. Paul Hayes' pass found Bradley Wright-Phillips 20 yards from goal and the prolific striker scored his fourth goal of the campaign by firing an unstoppable drive beyond the reach of visiting keeper Richard O'Donnell.
Dale Stephens blazed over from eight yards after Wright-Phillips' poor clearance was played into his path by a Wednesday defender.
Owls boss Gary Megson was clearly unimpressed by his side's poor start and replaced Chris Sedgwick with Ryan Lowe after just 22 minutes.
Lowe suffered an injury early in the second half and ironically found himself replaced by Morrison in the 53rd minute.
And it was Morrison who drew his side level three minutes later when the veteran striker headed home a Chris Lines corner before running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the visiting fans.

Cole eyes the centre ground at Lille

Anyone who has followed Joe Cole's career with any interest will know how long he has coveted a role as a classic central playmaker.
An outlandishly gifted teenager, who first caught public attention for his show-stopping role in West Ham United's 9-0 annihilation of Coventry City in the 1999 FA Youth Cup final, Cole was used in various positions at Upton Park before seeming to find his true vocation as a wide player at Chelsea.

Jose Mourinho's tutelage made Cole a more disciplined and therefore more effective attacking player. Chastised by the coach for playing to the crowd after netting the winning goal in a league game against Liverpool in October 2004, he quickly realised that to become a top-rank international player he would have to cut down on the party tricks that had gilded his rise to prominence.

In time, Cole learnt to harness his talents for the good of the team and there was no more fitting demonstration of this marriage of flair and efficiency than the goal he scored in the title-clinching 3-0 defeat of Manchester United in May 2006, when a quick-witted shuffle took him away from three defenders before he beat Edwin van der Sar with a sure-footed shot.

Having suppressed his desire to pull the strings from central areas, he appeared to have avoided falling victim to the innate English mistrust of technically exceptional players that stalled the careers of playmakers like Rodney Marsh and Matt Le Tissier.

However, after injuries disrupted the final years of his Chelsea career, he joined Liverpool in July 2010 amid a haze of uncertainty. Why had Chelsea not offered him a new contract? Was he a busted flush? Had the cruciate ligament injury he sustained in 2009 stolen his powers of acceleration? And would he finally be given a chance to play in the centre?

He was, but his failure to seize the opportunity saw him swiftly restored to the flanks and then dropped altogether. Roy Hodgson - who admitted Cole's transfer had been instigated prior to his own arrival - gave short shrift to the player's subsequent complaints. "You'll have to ask him what isn't working," said Hodgson in December last year. "If he says the only place he can play is behind the striker, he is limiting his chances of playing here."

Cole's decision to join Lille, amid reported interest from several English clubs, came as a surprise but perhaps it merely reflects his desire to shake off the perception that he is only effective in wide positions.

Asked where he saw himself playing, his telling reply was that he hoped to be deployed as one of the central midfielders in the French champions' trademark 4-3-3.

With Eden Hazard and Dimitri Payet barring his way on the flanks and captain Rio Mavuba a certain pick, Cole's best chance of winning a first-team place may rest on his ability to dislodge either the combative Florent Balmont or the more progressive Benoit Pedretti, who was signed from Auxerre to replace Yohan Cabaye.

A 4-2-3-1 with Hazard, Cole and Payet in the attacking midfield band would certainly not want for creativity. Cole could be forgiven, however, for the odd envious glance sideways at Hazard. At 20, the Belgian possesses a searing pace that Cole never had and is embarking upon what promises to be an extraordinary career.

Lille president Michel Seydoux has praised Cole's "intelligent" views on the game and the thoughtful 29-year-old will hope his technical qualities allow him to win the trust of his new employers in a way he managed only fleetingly in England. Cole may never again dazzle as he did in his fearless West Ham youth team days, but he will at least hope to prove once and for all that he can handle the spotlight on centre stage.

Euro U21 - England U21s see off Israel

Second half goals from Martyn Waghorn, Marvin Sordell, a Nathan Delfouneso penalty and Henri Lansbury saw England power to victory after finding themselves behind at the break thanks to a Mohammad Klibat strike.
There were three debuts in the England side as Manchester United's Ben Amos, Everton's Ross Barkley and Liverpool's Andre Wisdom all picked up their first caps whereas Dan Gosling, Jonjo Shelvey, Sordell and Waghorn were all making their first starts, showing that Stuart Pearce was prepared to experiment in the only friendly his team have this year.
The patched together nature of the England side was evident early on as they struggled to find their rhythm and although they were happy to dominate possession in the opening stages, they did not come close to hurting the visitors.
The first shot in anger came on 18 minutes from the 17-year-old Barkley who looked lively and fired in an effort from just outside the penalty box that was parried away by the Israeli goalkeeper Boris Kleyman.
It looked like the home side might just be starting to impose themselves on the game in the following minutes when they went a goal behind to a fine strike from Klibat.
As an England corner was cleared, Israel broke at real pace and Manchester City's Guy Assulin raced to the edge of the opposition's penalty before squaring it to the waiting Klibat, he cut onto his left foot and curled an excellent strike.into the top left corner leaving Amos no chance at all.
The young lions were rattled by that breakthrough but composed themselves and Shelvey and then Gosling came close but they could not find an equaliser before the break and went in to face their manager surprisingly behind.
Pearce made three changes at half time, introducing Lansbury, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Smith, and a combination of the new additions and whatever the manager said seemed to make an instant impact.
The tempo was raised and Sordell was a lot less isolated at the start of the second half and the only real surprise was that it took 13 minutes for England to draw level, but they did on 58 minutes, via the head of Waghorn.
Oxlade-Chamberlain did brilliantly down the right, showing great pace in beating two men and then picking out his colleague who was totally unmarked at the back post and had the simple task of nodding it past Kleyman which he did with ease.
The home side were buoyed by the goal and just three minutes later they were ahead and in some style as Sordell received the ball 30 yards out with his back to goal, turned onto his left foot and thrashed an effort into the top right corner without thinking twice. It was a moment of inspiration from the Watford man and set Oakwell alight with its quality.
Israel showed great commitment and did anything but roll over as the goal scorer Klibat and substitute Muanas Dabbur squandered good chances, but it was all over for them in the 82nd minute as England made it 3-1 from the penalty spot.
Oxlade-Chamberlain again showed his extreme pace on the right and skipped away from two before Ofir Davidzada left a leg out and tripped the Arsenal man, the referee took a second to decide but with the help of the linesman made the right decision.
Substitute Nathan Delfouneso stepped up and calmly slotted the spot kick into the bottom right corner sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.
England's comeback was complete in the 92nd minute when another of the substitutes Lansbury made it 4-1, thanks again to the work of Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Again he broke at supreme pace down the right wing and again he showed great composure to pick out Lansbury who was breaking into the box, his first touch teed himself up for a thunderous volley from six yards out which left Kleyman no chance.
As much as Pearce will have been disappointed with the first half, the second will have more than made up for it and his side eventually ran out worthy and convincing winners.

City board to investigate 'cancer email'

It is understood Cook denies sending the email, which was supposed to be going to City's director of football Brian Marwood anyway, and thinks his email account was hacked into.
"Following allegations made to the football club by Dr Anthonia Onuoha, subsequently reported in today's media, the club can confirm that a board-led review has been launched into the matter," said a City statement released on Monday evening.
The claims relate to correspondence involving Onuoha's mother, who looks after all the player's contractual arrangements and Marwood over a dispute in October last year.
She was stunned to receive an e-mail, purporting to be from Cook, which mocked her use of the phrase "ravaged with it" to describe her condition.
"When I opened up my e-mails and saw the message, it was the worst day of my life, even worse than being diagnosed with cancer," Dr Onuoha told The Sun.
"I couldn't understand how anyone could behave like that. I'm critically ill.

Dominant Serena breezes past Ivanovic

Both players struggled with their serves and ground strokes on a gusty Arthur Ashe Stadium but it was the American who fared better.
"I think we could have both played a little bit better because of the conditions," said three-time U.S. Open champion Williams.
"It was crazy. I didn't even go for winners at any point. I just tried to get it over because it was so windy. It was definitely tough."
The hard-serving Williams powered in nine aces and had just one double fault, while Ivanovic landed three aces and committed eight double faults. The 16th-seeded made more than twice as many unforced errors as Williams.
"In those kind of conditions, serve is the shot that's gonna go away from both players because of the conditions," Ivanovic said. "My serve broke down a little more than hers did."
Williams, who has played only a handful of tournaments this year since returning to the game after a long injury layoff and a life-threatening blood clot, said she was still counting her blessings for each opportunity on court.
"I feel so blessed to be here," she said. "A couple of months ago, I didn't think I would, so every match is a bonus."
Williams, who also has had to deal with the diagnosis that older sister Venus was suffering from an autoimmune disorder that caused her to withdraw from the championship, was in a lighthearted mood after the victory.
The 29-year-old joked about film director Spike Lee, a good friend who was cheering her on during the match, and about the karaoke room in her house.
"I know Spike really, really well," Williams said. "We hit together once or twice. He's good.
"He's crazy. He wants to win more than I do. He's like, 'Hit it to me really hard.' He's actually really good. He's like really, really intense. I'm a little intimidated."
Williams, whose ranking slipped from number one to 175 before climbing back to 27 after two hard court titles in the lead-up to the last grand slam of the season, said she does not worry about rankings and that winning tournaments would take care of that.
Then she ruminated about where the next trophies would go, since she had run out of space to exhibit them all.
"I have a new house in L.A. I created a karaoke room, so I can't put trophies in there," she said.
"We sing our hearts out. We've sung til 8:00 in the morning. I was like, 'Oh my God, the sun's coming out.' We keep singing and singing and singing. It's magical."

US Open - Djokovic wears down tricky Dolgopolov

The Serb won the opening set decider 16-14 on his sixth set point, cupping his hand over his ear to encourage the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd's roars of approval before pumping his fist in joy.
"Winning it was very important," the world number one said. "That was probably the turning point. After that it was a good performance."
Djokovic had his hands full figuring out the unorthodox style of his 22-year-old opponent as well as the swirling winds that swept over the National Tennis Center but his straight-sets win meant he still has yet to lose a set in the tournament.
"He played a lot of low balls, slices....I was confused on the court," he said. "But it was really exciting."
Djokovic advanced to a quarter-finals clash with his good friend and Davis Cup team mate Janko Tipsarevic, who beat Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain 7-5 6-7 7-5 6-2 in a match that lasted nearly four hours.
"It means there's going to be at least one Serbian in the semi-finals, which is great for our country," Djokovic said.
"I think this is the first time I play Janko in a Grand Slam. We are great friends. It's not going to be easy to play him, but look, it's the quarter-finals and we both want to win."
